PROJECT OVERVIEW
The proposed project if constructed will have a significant impact
on south central Kansas. The lake will provide water to communities,
will be an economic development engine, and provide an improved
quality of life through, among other things, increased recreation
opportunities, work force recruitment, and retirement retention.
The proposed project provides a unique opportunity for the State
of Kansas. No other man-made lake of this size has been constructed
in the United States that addresses not only the utilitarian needs
(water supply, hydroelectricity, flood control), but also addresses
the environmental issues and economic development opportunities
and needs of a region.
Because of the geographic location and topography of the Grouse
and Silver Creek drainage basins, the proposed site provides a perfect
location for this outstanding project. All Kansans will be excited
about and proud of the proposed project.
Located approximately seven miles east of Arkansas City, the 8,000
surface acre lake will be comparable in size to Cheney and El Dorado
Lake but longer and narrower in a hilly environment. The lake is
envisioned to be similar to Grand Lake in Oklahoma where the fastest
growing counties of Oklahoma are located.
The economic impacts will be many. Immediate impacts will be new
jobs and increased spending for housing, goods and services. Long-term
economic growth will result from the development, increased tourism,
and employment opportunities as existing companies expand or are
created to meet increasing demand
